I just sat through the Experience Breakthrough with Microsoft Dynamics-strategic briefing. What I actually ended up experiencing was PowerPoint demos. Demos of stuff that they say is ready for release or released. I’ve actually seen some of these live, so I know they work. Why not show these live?
They had a very elaborate PowerPoint presentations, where all the different screens from the software were present, so you could almost have been fooled to think that it was real, if it wasn’t for those grey PowerPoint controls at the bottom left edge of the screen. It seriously took away a lot of the oomph from what should have been cool demos.
The whole concept of mash-up applications and composite user interfaces is seriously cool, and perhaps that was one additional reason why I found these “demos” to be so disappointing.
But to their credit I have to say that at the end they were able to show a very cool Windows forms application running under Vista that pulled data out of AX through Web Services.
One final complaint was that the demo focused a lot on Dynamics AX 4.0, with a little bit of CRM thrown in. Dynamics AX had a lot of nice stuff for talking to it through Web Services, with a very nice developer experience. I hope to see the same for Dynamics NAV soon.
